Canadian Royalties Connects Remote Mining Camps With RAMTelecom

Canadian Royalties, is a Quebec-based mining exploration firm that has been prospecting in Canada's remote northern regions since 1998. The company's principal site is the Raglan South Nickel Project in the Nunavik region of Northern Quebec.

Since its inception, communications at the Raglan site was limited to relatively expensive and inefficient mobile, hand-held satellite-based voice and data service.

In 2004, Canadian Royalties approached RAMTelecom to improve communications at the site. RAMTelecom first streamlined the site's data network with a better approach to satellite-based data communications based on RAMTelecom's LinkStar VSAT system. Then RAMTelecom introduced a complete VoIP system to supplement the new data network.

The RAMTelecom voice solution at the Raglan site is a complete carrier-grade VoIP system built around RAMTelecom's LinkStar technology. The system includes a TalkSwitch 48-CVA VoIP PBX at base camp connected to MediaTrix® gateways and TalkSwitch TS100 VoIP telephones. The entire network is connected to the outside world with three inbound/outbound VoIP lines provided through RAMTelecom's Enterprise level VoIP service.

"This voice system has given head office more direct visibility into the site's daily operations," says Glen Schlyter, the Operations Manager at Canadian Royalties. "It has improved the ability of head office and site personnel to manage operational logistics and have all four camps at the site coordinate daily efforts and work as a complete unit rather than independent entities. Most importantly, it has improved supply chain management because personnel can now place calls to key external suppliers for everything from drill bits to pork chops.

"Based on usage and the extent to which the system has improved our operations, I can say we have seen a 100% return on our investment in a matter of months. We've reduced our monthly communications expenses by over 50 per cent, while greatly improving communications for our employees and contractors."
